If you have just been contacted

Stop. Challenge. Protect. If something feels urgent, unusual or unexpected, pause and check before you act. 

Do not move money to a “safe account”.

• Do not share passcodes or security details. 
• Do not download remote-access software or let anyone take control of your device. 
• End the call or stop the conversation and contact us using a trusted number, such as the one on our website or the back of your card. Wider UK fraud guidance also recommends using a known or trusted number when you think you may be dealing with a fraudster. 

If you have already sent money

Call us immediately on +44 (0)20 7920 4920. We will try to stop or recover funds where possible. 

You should also report the matter to Report Fraud, the UK’s national reporting service for cyber crime and fraud. You can report online at Report Fraud or by phone on 0300 123 2040. The current official service confirms that members of the public can report cyber crime and fraud using that website and phone number.

When you report to Report Fraud, you will receive a crime reference number. The official service says reports made through Report Fraud generate a police crime reference number. 

If you have received a suspicious email, text message or phone call

If you have received a suspicious email, text message, phone call, advert or website link, but you have not responded or lost money, you can still report it. The UK government guidance says suspicious emails, calls, websites and texts should be reported, and specifically says not to give out private information, reply to suspicious texts, download attachments or click on links if you are not sure they are genuine.
